How to Write Cat Sitter Instructions for Your Home

The food disappears, but in a two-cat home that does not tell a sitter which cat ate it. Useful cat sitter instructions describe what to do and what to observe for each animal. Give the sitter a recognizable photo or description, exact care steps, door precautions, and a veterinary contact plan. Keep ordinary routines simple enough that the sitter can repeat them without guessing.

Do not wait on urinary warning signs.

If your cat repeatedly strains and produces little or no urine, seek immediate veterinary attention. Cornell explains why suspected blockage is an emergency.

Describe each cat before describing the supplies

Include each cat's name, a clear identifying description or photo, usual resting or hiding locations, and preferred approach. Tell the sitter when to give space and which forms of handling are unsuitable. Do not ask them to drag a cat out of hiding just to prove the visit happened.

Show the food, actual measure, feeding location, bowls, water, and litter tools. Write the normal routine and any current veterinarian-provided instructions. FelineVMA supports predictable meals and accessible, separated resources; keep those arrangements familiar while you are away.

Demonstrate prescribed care before leaving. A public template cannot establish a medication dose or teach every cat-specific handling task.

Make door and litter routines explicit

Explain how to enter and leave without a cat following through the doorway. Identify doors and windows that must remain secured. Agree on a procedure if a cat cannot be located; leave known hiding areas and a backup contact rather than an instruction to search noisily everywhere.

Specify which trays to scoop, where waste goes, and what the sitter should report about litter use. Ask for observations, not a diagnosis. In a shared household, a single tray cannot always tell you which cat produced a change.

Repeated straining with little or no urine needs immediate veterinary attention. Cornell identifies suspected urinary blockage as an emergency. Put that instruction where the sitter will see it before they encounter the problem.

Agree on what happens when you cannot answer

List owner and local backup contacts, the regular clinic, and an emergency clinic with address and current hours. Agree with the sitter and clinic on care consent and payment arrangements in advance. Do not assume a copied template creates legal authorization.

AVMA recommends contacting veterinary care in an emergency. Tell the sitter not to wait indefinitely for an owner reply when urgent care is needed. Provide an accessible carrier and explain where it is, while respecting the sitter's training and ability to handle your cat safely.

Keep home-access codes private and share them through an appropriate agreed channel.

Finish with a rehearsal and a short visit log

Hypothetical example: the sitter follows your dinner note while you are home. One cat approaches the wrong bowl. You add names to the feeding spots and explain the actual routine before the trip. The rehearsal finds ambiguity a longer instruction sheet might miss.

The Pet Health & Wellness Log Book (paid link to Amazon) listing includes a pet-sitting section for preferred sitters and contact details. It may help keep recurring contacts together, while the current cat-specific care sheet still needs exact routines, emergency contacts, and any clinic-provided directions.
