What to Ask Before Booking Cat-Friendly Accommodation

You find a pet-friendly room and begin packing the carrier. But the listing never says cats. Ask that question first: does this exact property accept your cat on your dates? Then check room-entry rules, fees, and whether you can set up a secure litter and resting area. That short conversation is more useful than discovering a species restriction at reception.

Say cat, rather than relying on pets welcome

Give the property your dates and number of cats. Ask explicitly whether cats are accepted in the room type you plan to book. Get the answer in writing and ask for the current policy. IHG's own accommodation guidance notes that acceptance of cats can differ by property; a dog-friendly search result is not enough.

Confirm records, carrier requirements in shared areas, and any limits. Ask whether a third-party booking needs an extra step to register the cat. Keep the answer attached to the reservation so the arrival staff can see what was agreed.

Plan for a door that other people may open

Ask how housekeeping, maintenance, and other staff visits are handled when a cat is in the room. Can you schedule cleaning while you are present? Is a pet notice used? A notice is a communication aid, not a physical safeguard.

Before opening the room door, know where the cat is and how you will prevent escape. Use the closed carrier during arrival and other necessary transitions. FelineVMA's vehicle-transport guidance supports secure carrier travel; it does not mean a carrier should become an all-day hotel accommodation.

Clarify unattended-pet rules separately. Hotel permission and your cat's individual care needs are two different checks. Arrange a plan that satisfies both.

Ask whether the room can support your supplies

Ask about usable floor space, waste disposal, cleaning supplies you may use, and rooms with features that may be difficult to secure. Do not assume a balcony or window screen provides reliable containment. Inspect the assigned room on arrival.

Hypothetical example: a compact room has only one clear corner. You need to fit a familiar resting option and a litter tray without clustering everything beside food and water. Request a floor plan or more information before booking; if the arrangement cannot work, choose a more suitable room.

Bring the cat's usual litter and familiar bedding when practical. For a portable litter tray (paid link to Amazon), check stability, usable size, entry height, zipper, and cleaning directions. A small folding footprint is not the only consideration.

Close the booking loop before you travel

Record the room and pet charges, deposits, cancellation terms, room-entry arrangement, and emergency contact. Ask whether the pet charge is per cat, per night, or per stay; do not infer it from a different property's policy.

Keep the cat travel carrier and a small arrival pouch accessible rather than buried under luggage. Pack only the items needed for the first setup there: familiar litter supplies, water bowl, bedding, and the room-entry note.

If the property's answers remain vague about cats or staff access, resolve those issues before committing. The useful result is an accommodation plan you can actually carry out, not simply a room with a pet icon.

Optional product example to compare

A portable tray can be useful for a temporary room setup, but confirm the property's cat and waste policies first. Check the listed dimensions, entry, zipper, and cleaning instructions, and bring familiar litter when practical. This product has not been independently tested by Raspaw.
